'The future of European Citizens' political rights" - EUMANS Weekly Meeting 11 Feb - Draft

Post by VirginiaFiume »

Thursday 11th of February at 6 PM we will host "The Future of European Citizens' Political Rights", an event hosted during the EUMANS Weekly Date (registration and link here).

@Manlio (and whoever wants) here is a draft of the invite if you want to tell me what you think - and make suggestions.
I also added for the Agora version of the inivte a background story that connects how we planned this event with the "bigger picture" of EUMANS Initiatives.

It's time for European citizens to better understand their political rights and connect with each other to strengthen their existing democratic rights. Both an EU, European and a local level.

With our discussants:

Daniela Vancic, European Programme Manager at Democracy International and lead of the Advocacy Working Group of Citizens Take Over Europe
Iago Rodriguez, Voters Without Borders European Citizens Initiative Committee
Andras Juhasz & Antonia Boorman, the3million Young Europeans Network
Michele Fiorillo, CIVICO Europa coordinator and co-lead of the European Citizens' Assembly Working Group of Citizens Take Over Europe
Camille Dobler, Jagielloński University, PLATO network
Marco Cappato, President of EUMANS and promoter of

Facilitators: Virginia Fiume, EUMANS Coordinator and Manlio Trovato, EUMANS Activist and activist

What can we do as European citizens to increase the impact of our political demands within the framework of a functioning democracy based on sustainability and rule of law?

How did Brexit impact the role of 3 million EU Citizens living in the UK on local and national politics? Why the "Conference on the Future of Europe" could transform the lives of million of European citizens and why it cannot only be a "negotiation" process among the EU institutions (Counci, Paliament and Commission) and the organised civil society (Trade Unions,...)? How Assemblies of European Citizens can contribute to the evolution of European Democracy?

And most importantly what we can all do so that participatory democracy instruments gain a seat at the tables where decisions on our rights (economical, social, cultural) are taken?

Join other citizens and activists to learn more about the actions and initiatives across Europe and find ways to take action immediately.

This event is organised in the framework of the EUMANS Weekly Dates. It is conceived as an opportunity to discuss with citizens and members of organisations and campaigns we collaborate with, in particular the European Citizens Initiative, the European Citizens Initiative and the coalition Citizens Take Over Europe.

A couple of weeks ago the referendum committee of the Italian small town Santa Marinella joined the EUMANS Italian Weekly meeting to report a case of infringement of citizens political right.

With the motivation of anti-covid restricitions, the local Mayor didn't guarantee the permission to collect signatures for the promotion of the local referendum on the decision-making process on private vs public ownership and management of local services However, he also didn't make sure that alternative ways to collect the signatures were guaranteed.

Two things happened:
1) EUMANS entered in action, And the activists and the Santa Marinella committee met for a joint action of collection of signatures: on the local referendum and on the European Citizens Initiative (we need to askf @MiriamTurrini and @Angela Capuano pictures and stories). And now we are exploring how judiciary action could be carried on. (actually, if you have any idea or interpretation you are more than welcome)

2) During the debate both @Manlio and @Marco Cappato made the connection with the European scale.
Marco connected the topic from the perspective of the role of participatory democracy in the decision-making process on essential services for the community. Drawing the line with the decisions on the Recovery Fund.
Plus, he reminded us how many cases like this of "reduction" of possibilities of collecting signatures for institutional participatory democracy initiatives happen without anyone even noticing it. And how a huge democratic opportunity at a EU Level (The Conference on the Future of Europe) got postponed because of the pandemic. And how EUMANS with the EU CAN DO IT Petition to the European Parliament and the sparkle in the Citizens Take Over Europe coalition is carrying on this struggle.

On the other side, Manlio connected the local action of the Young European 3 Million demanding their right to take part in the UK Local Elections (A right that they lost after Brexit) and the European Citizens Initiative for the increase of political rights of the so-called "EU Mobile Citizens".

Next Thursday, 11th of February we will cover these topics during the EUMANS Weekly Date at 6 PM - register here

Thanks Virgina. There will be lots to talk about.

It would be good to emphasise the link between EU citizenship and voting rights without borders in the EU.

Also, rephrase “On the other side, Manlio connected the local action of the Young European 3 Million promoting participation of EU citizens to UK local elections (a right which is at risk of being lost after Brexit).
