From activists to activists: an open letter to Greta Thunberg from the promoters of Carbon Pricing European Citizens Initiative

Read the open letter that on the 5th of March a group of European citizens active in the committee of the European Citizens Initiative “StopGlobalWarming.eu – A price for carbon to fight climate change” to Greta Thunberg and the Fridays for Future activists.

Dear Greta, dear all climate activists,

I’m Carlo, a student, a climate activist and the coordinator of StopGlobalWarming.eu. I’ve written this short open letter to you with other European climate activists.

I’ve been following you from the very first moment of your climate activism and I fully agree with your open letter to the EU leaders and I think we could obtain even more.

More than 11.000 scientists, declaring the climate emergency, stated that we need to put a much higher price on GHG emissions if we truly want to tackle the climate crisis. As European citizens, we can directly demand the EU Commission to do something to reduce emission at the scale and the speed that is necessary to our future and human life, through the European Citizens Initiative (ECI). The ECI is a democratic right that allows 1.000.000 of EU citizens to propose a concrete change in EU law. This is what I’ve done in the last months with other activists in Europe: we ask the European Commission to put a much higher price on carbon emission to reduce our ecological footprint and to stop the consumption of fossil fuel from now, not from 2030 or 2050. This is also a policy that can be helpful to the EU Commission to achieve the goal of Carbon Neutrality of the Climate Law. We also ask the EU Commission to use the revenue to reduce taxes on lower incomes, helping the most vulnerable people.

What we propose is considered the most effective way to stop global warming by 27 Nobel prizes and thousands of scientists from all over the world.

To make the change and to achieve our goal we need 1.000.000 million signatures on StopGlobalWarming.eu, I think that your goals are our goals: a better, fairer and greener future. Help us to make the change and reach 1.000.000 of EU citizens.
