Celebrating the past to build a better future – message from the organisers

On 12 December it will be 5 years since the signing of the Paris Agreement between Member states of the Convention of the United Nations, which established a global framework to limit global warming and avoid dangerous climate change.

A tree was planted, but the sun and rain haven’t started yet. The objectives have been defined, but the paths we need to take to

achieve them have not been found. The international conference “The Paris Agreement 5 years later – the way ahead” is an occasion to explore possible paths and political solutions. We know that economy and ecology are different issues, and that if it came to a clash between them, economics would defeat ecology.

So our ambition is to promote a sustainable, more ecological economy, an ecology which respects the dreams, needs and wellbeing of the people.

An idea on the table is “carbon pricing”. For many years, 27 Nobel Prize winners have been showing us a way forward: carbon pricing, that is setting a price, a tax on C02 emissions in order to progressively remove incentives on carbon production and at the same time reduce taxes on labor.

With the resulting revenue, we could encourage energy saving, promote renewable energy (which is less competitive now due to the drop in the price

of fossil energy as a result of the pandemic) and reduce taxes on the lowest incomes. The proposal has been relaunched by the ongoing European Citizens’ Initiative www.StopGlobalWaming.Eu.

The Conference on december the 12th will give the opportunity to discuss this and other proposals aimed to face climate change with the needed urgency.
