Imagine devoting your life to a single cause: bringing justice to the victims of the most heinous crimes. Now imagine waking up one morning to find that, for this, you have been punished. You can no longer use your credit card. You can’t pay through online services. You can’t buy from online stores, or use the American IT services that all of us rely on, every day, without a second thought.
This is the life of Solomy Balungi Bossa, a judge of the International Criminal Court, hit by the sanctions Donald Trump imposed to stop the Court — the same Court also sanctioned by Putin’s Russia. When the two superpowers agree on one thing alone — crushing those who defend human rights — someone has to stand up.
More than 260 citizens have already stood up
A relay hunger strike, organized together with No Peace Without Justice, has brought together over 260 citizens demanding that Europe protect the Court. Ordinary people giving up food for a day because they believe international justice cannot be allowed to die in silence.
On June 25, the mobilization takes a decisive step forward. Judge Bossa will take the stage at the Ateneo de Madrid, before the Spanish Minister of Justice Félix Bolaños, alongside members of the European Parliament, academics and magistrates. She will tell the world what it means to be sanctioned for defending victims.
From Spain — the only major country with the courage to call for a European shield to protect the Court — the fightback for international law begins.
Judge Bossa can only reach Madrid if we take her there
