Oslo honours, Washington sanctions

The United States has put the International Criminal Court under sanctions, on the same day the Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, a judge of the Court in its early years. Pass the message on: the more people know, the harder it is for Europe to stand still.

The United States has put the International Criminal Court itself under sanctions. On 9 October, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced it in a video threatening to put an end to the Court: its assets in the US frozen, transactions banned, American companies given six months to cut all ties.

On the same day, the Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, a judge of that very Court in its early years. Oslo honours those who bring war crimes and genocide to trial. Washington punishes those who keep doing it.

Europe has the tool to respond: the Blocking Statute, which shields European citizens and companies from sanctions like these. It must be activated now.

Washington has sanctioned the International Criminal Court itself.

Oslo honours those who spent their lives bringing war crimes and genocide to trial. Washington punishes those who keep doing it.

Now it is Europe’s turn

The tool to respond already exists: it is called the Blocking Statute, and it shields European citizens and companies from sanctions like these. Every day Brussels fails to activate it is a political choice.
